Freedom to do anything

Posted in Life with my girls at 11:55 pm by tina

Somewhere along the parenting training-on-the-job , I’ve decided to intentionally leave Sat as the “we will do whatever we please” time. It’s been working out nicely for us. I don’t have to rush BOTH girls out so that Maddy can have some lesson while tag-along Livy and I wait on the sideline. Some days we just do projects at home, and other days we go to special events or places around this area.
We went to Museum of Life and Science this Sat. The girls had a blast. If we didn’t have fellowship in the afternoon, we would have stayed there much longer (we only went through about half of the stuff in three hours)
Occasionally it still gives me a panic attack thinking “oh.. I’m not making her go to Chinese School” or “oh, she should learn how to swim” or “maybe I should sign both of them up for xxxx”. But when they start dancing and twisting for no apparent reasons except that they’re happy and enjoying our simple outings, I wouldn’t trade it for anything else in the world:

Cultural Parade 2008

Little girl’s first ‘parade’ in school. She was adorable, althought noticeably the shortest kid in her class. She is my China Doll ;)

She is working

Posted in Livy at 10:26 pm by tina

On the way from getting her flu mist (I LOVED the flu mist)
Livy: Why are you driving?
me: Why am I driving? Well, are you going to drive?
Livy: I can’t.
me: Why not?
Livy: I’m working.
me: You’re working? What are you working on?
Livy: I am working on my lollipop.

Lazy September

Posted in Life with my girls at 9:41 pm by tina

Sept has been a nice and slow month for us now that ah-goon/ah-ma are settling down in NC and we’re used to the new routines with Maddy going to kindergarten.
We are enjoying being park-hoppers and having tons of fun with the girls:

Bug Fest

Posted in Life with my girls at 3:46 pm by tina

We went to the annual Bug Fest at Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh on Sat morning. First of all, it is so sad to see that the girls have turned into two Southern Girls. It was a beautiful California day, and the big girl complained how cold it was and she needed to go inside.
There were rows and rows of different bugs, but the girls really weren’t that into them. They were more thrilled to see the museum’s regular exhibits such as fish, beaver, snakes, and turtles. At the honeybee station, they were more into lining up to get a free honey cracker than touching the baby bees. I made them learn something new (because I wasn’t going to tolerate the crowds for nothing) and found out about how to find the Queen Bee (the slightly larger bee with a red dot on the back).
Out favorite part is the ‘bug tasting stations’. We ate “Ant-chilada”, “Bug ice cream”(some fried bugs on vanilla ice cream), salsa and chip (with the worms in it), and bug-fudge (which we saved for daddy). To be honest, they didn’t taste like anything. I decided not to eat the worm in the salsa at the end though. I don’t think I would like the slimy texture.

Field trip with mommy

Posted in Life with my girls at 11:40 pm by tina

It really translate to: Mommy needs to run an errand after the big girl’s physical checkup, so I announced to her that we’re going on a “field trip” to the Post Office.
The girl was thrilled to see where all her packages from grandparents/cousins, and I even let her pick out which stamps (of course she picked the disney ones) we should get. I think she got it down, except the stamp part. She insisted that the stamps are just the same as the stickers she has. Since I wouldn’t give her REAL stamps for her normal drawings to her friends and school teachers, I guess stickers will just have to do.

Five year old checkup

Height: 41 3/4 inches (25-50%)
Weidhgt: 42 pds (50-75%)
Looks like the big girl continues to be on the same curve for the past 5 years.

Clubhouse fan

Posted in Maddy at 9:53 pm by tina

I had always known that the popular Y program or any other sports related camps will not work for Maddy. She is just like me: high energy crowds and loud noises just drain us to no ends. At the same time, I didn’t want to send her to some concentrated camp where she does the same thing all day long for the entire week. I was quite pleased to have found Bright Horizons Clubhouse, a facility just for school aged kids for her Track Out programs and signed her up even before she started kindergarten.
Her first trackout started this Monday. I was relieved to find out that two other boys from her class are also going there. Even though they don’t really play with each other, at least she knows a few faces.
They went on two field trips already. The girl had her first real experience of bowling on Tuesday, and they went on to another swimming field trip yesterday. She had said that she likes the clubhouse every time I asked her about it, but I couldn’t feel out just exactly how much she likes it until last night during our bed time routine-
Maddy: When do I go back?
me: What do you mean?
Maddy: When do I go back to school?
me: Well, each trackout is three weeks. This is your first week, so you still have two more weeks. Do you like the clubhouse?
Maddy: yea.
me: yea? I was thinking that you go this week and next week. Maybe you can hang out with mommy or daddy or even ah-goon the last week?
Maddy: No.
me: no? Why not? You don’t want to hang out with me?
Maddy: Well. I think I’m just going to go to the clubhouse all three weeks.

So that settles it.

At least she is honest

The little girl and I walked Brownie together after dinner (Maddy decided that she didn’t want to go out so she and daddy stayed home). Olivia was asking all sorts of questions. Two other neighbors walked by with their dogs:
Livy: What are they doing?
me: They’re walking their dogs like us, and they’re talking to each other like how we talke to each other.
me: I like it when you talk to me and tell me things.
Livy: [apparently pondered about my thoughts briefly] I like ahma cook.
Livy: Mommy cook today.
Yes baby girl. Mommy likes it too when ahma cooks. Tomorrow night, little girl. Tomorrow night we eat at ah-goon and ah-ma’s.

First Trackout

Posted in Life with my girls at 9:20 pm by tina

Maddy completed her first quarter (9 weeks) in her kindergarten. Since she is in the year-around school, she will have three weeks of break (track out) before going back to school again.
We’re very pleased with her learning environment. It is really incredible to see that she is on the brim of starting to read on her own (they have build a few sight words now), flying through the addition/subtraction on daddy’s IPhone while killing time, and her drawing books with stories.
But the funniest one is nothing but the Athletic Award she got from her PE class. When I saw the paper, I was 110% sure that “I am sure EVERYONE in the PE class got it”. But we found out only two people from the PE class (one person from the dolphins class and one person from the busy bee class, which Maddy is in got the award.
I feel so bad but I couldn’t stop laughing (She and sports do not mix well). Finally I got a hold of myself and asked what she had to do to get the Athletic Award. “I don’t know.” said the child. Joe and I concluded that she must be the one who is able to recite the rules of whatever game they played and followed them religiously.

One book (Zoo) she made in school

Another book on Coudroy she made

Special date

Posted in Livy at 9:42 pm by tina

Little girl’s preschool has a Teacher’s Workday, so we took shift spending quality time with her.
Joe had a date with her to the library in the morning. She got to do some serious reading all at her pace.
I took her to see The Wiggles with a few other preschool girls. She’s been saying “I go see Wiggles with mommy” since I told her about it yesterday. The pool girl doesn’t even know who the Wiggles are. After she became old enough to watch/understand TV, big girl has passed the age of watching Wiggles and other “Baby videos”. The child has not been watching age-appropriate shows for her. She just tags along, watching whatever Maddy watches: Curious George, Between the Lions, and of course all the Disney stories.
She was totally mesmerized by the Wiggles, and I tressured the moments we got to spend with each other, just the two of us. I would definitely like to do it more often.

Coming out of her girly shelf

Posted in Maddy at 8:21 pm by tina

Back in preschool, I went through listening to the girl’s complaint once a week “I don’t like JumpBunch (An outside company who goes to the school once a week for their special class). All they do is talk about sports, AND you have to participate”
It’s no surprise to me that once a week in kindergarten, I also have to hear her whine on her PE day… such a punishment for her on PE day: not only she has to do sports for 40 minutes straight, she can not wear dresses/skirts on PE days. THE HORROR!!
When I got their rotation schedule last Friday, I rolled my eyes in my head. Lucky me, their class gets not only one, but TWO PE days for the next rotation. Why can’t they have two Music days, or two Art days, even two Spanish days. No.. it has to be two PE days, that would be two mornings each week that I have to hear the girl whine about how not wearing a dress is ruining her life.
But something about Kingerdergarten PE class is changing her. When I reminded her that Friday is also a PE day during bedtime, she happily went on to tell me about what they’ve been doing in PE classes “Skate boards, parachute, etc”.
“You mean you like PE class now?”
“Yea”
“Wow.. Kindergarten is so exciting!! Even Kindergarten PE class is fun?”
“Yep” and she closed her eyes w big smiles on her face.

I would never have guessed it.
