Maddy girl has her colors down pack now, even knows ‘brown’ and ‘pink’. Her favorite game is finding the colors in different places. “What else is [color]?” says the girl. The best room to play the game at home is in her playroom, and the worst room to play the game is mommy and daddy’s room, where everything is just a blah beige color.
She can also count from one to ten with no problems most of the times. Well, if the stuff in the book do not ‘line up’ perfectly, she still gets confused sometimes. But definitely no problem in just counting out loud from one to ten… We will work on the numbers in Chinese soon.
On the other hand, she still shows no interests in learning the ABC’s. Not that I worry about it or anything. After all, the child is only two. I think she knows A, B, C, and Y, but insists that “8″ is a “B”.
She loves the books, specially the ‘library’ books! Reading, reading, reading, that’s all she wants to do the moment she wakes up until the moment she goes to sleep. She has also started to ‘recap’ the stories outloud, something she never did before.
And as always, she has us wrapped around her little toes. Where did she learn that skill we would never know.

For the first time after countless little parades at school:
Instead of breaking down and started crying whenever she saw us in the parent crowd, her eyes lid up and SMILED during Halloween parade.
She just proudly stood there and grined, and walked back to her classroom with her teachers and the rest of the two-year-olds. Daddy caught a nice picture when she spotted him.

We walked into Maddy’s two-year-old Sunday School this morning. One of the teachers came and took Maddy and said “Maddy is the most independent child in this class” and Maddy went straight to the table and started playing with other kids.
People tell me different things about Maddy… but I have to admit, it always gives me extra pride (of which I don’t deserve) when they describe Maddy as independent.
I watch different teachers in 5-star preschools and help in the nursaries of several churches (and now being the nursary coordinator who interact with rest of the helpers weekly) long enough to know that even though we all try to treat each child equally, we can’t help but roll our eyes a little bit when a whining kid comes in. An outgoing and friendly child usually gets more love simply because they are pleasant to be around.
As several co-workers talked about the nursary needs.. how sometimes two co-workers can handle seven, eight kids no problem, but sometimes they can only handle two if certain kids are there (which is totally true, not trying to put down any kids or anything)…. I got this horrible image of the whining kid being mine. I don’t know why but it would be like a nightmare for me if I hear “Madison is the inconsolable child who cries the whole time and ruins everyone else’s mood”
Would I be as proud as I am today of her? Or would I become an horrible Chinese mom who complains “why can’t you be more like so and so?”
I wonder…..
I’m sure there are part of her personalities that won’t always agree with me; I’m sure there might be times where I secretly wish things are different. But I pray that God will remind me daily to embrace and love her for the person God has made her to be.

(Report from daddy)
What does a business trip mean to a two-year-old:
Daddy: Maddy, we’ll go to the library tonight.
Maddy: No mommy to library. Mommy go to the airport; lots of meetings
Daddy: Yea. Do you know when mommy is coming back?
Maddy: Tumblebus Friday
Daddy: Yep. Mommy will be back Friday night.

I’m going on my once in the blue moon business trip first thing tomorrow morning.
It’s the first time Maddy and I will be separated overnight.
I started to explain to her since yesterday. She seemed to understand somewhat….
I am so pathetic… missing her already tonight, with her sleeping in her room next to ours.
Papa Chen will have to pick up the pieces all by himself for the next three days!

Ah-goon and Ah-ma came to visit us this past weekend.
Why mommy enjoyed the weekend
1) I got needed rest.. lots of rest.. while ah-goon/ah-ma entertained the queen
2) I didn’t have to cook. Not that I cook that much to begin with, but I didn’t have to do anything cooking related
3) I got some really really good homemade food
Why daddy enjoyed the weekend
1) His MIL washed and folded his laundary. Daddy was a little embarrassed the first time my mom folded his underwear, but now he has no shame whatsoever.
2) He got to eat the best roast duck ever, and even got some credits for himself because he was the one who put the duck in the oven.
3) He didn’t have to take care of Maddy by himself while mommy tried to rest.
Why Maddy loved the weekend
1) Lots of hugs and kisses and silly games with Ah-ma
2) The girl who doesn’t touch meat very often (not that it is a problem by any means) ate ah-ma’s cha-shu pork and roast duck… lots of them… and lots of other good Chinese homecooking.
3) She got way too much praises for speaking well and singing many songs although they are simply things average two-year-olds all do.

The first thing Ms Larson and Ms Rogers told us when we went to pick up Maddy from school was that she’s been dry all day long.
She pee-peed every time they asked and had kept her diaper dry even through her nap. And that they’re pretty sure Maddy is ready for big girl underwears now.
How they manage to get her to go on commands I have no idea, but I’m glad someone is doing a better job training Maddy than me.
She did go pee-pee tonight at her one and only potty time at home all by herself, while I was laying in bed defeated by the fever and daddy was checking her bathwater. I heard her pee, then heard her giggled, then heard her running out mumbling “I did it”.
That’s my big girl!

Maddy has kindly shared her sickness with me..
I had the worst sore throat in the life last night, then finally broke down with fever late afternoon.
Our usual weakest link, that would be daddy, took over and has been wonderful since… took Maddy out for a night outing so I can rest and got her ready for bed while I just stared into the ceiling and listening to the girl chatting up a storm with her daddy.
Thank you so much daddy and hopefully you won’t get sick!

Maddy is doing much better potty training in school than at home.
She actually sits on the potty every time they change diapers now, and has pee-peed here and there.
She only agrees to sit on the potty once at home, right before her bath time.
However, she’s doing well with that one time potty time. 4 out of 5 times, she’s proudly produced pee-pees. She stands up and gives us her “big-girl” hugs, then does her victory march to the bathtub.
Too cute for her own good

You know when your child idolize you at the level you totally do not deserve:
After she patiently waited while you did your number two in the bathroom (ignoring my protests, of course), she clapped and exclaimed “Good job, mommy!” as your stinky poo-poos are being flushed down.
===========================
I’ve been carrying Maddy to our bed when she wakes up from coughing these past couple of days early in the mornings (partly to ensure that she doesn’t have any fever spiking up). We cuddled and relaxed until Brownie wakes up. Maddy crawls over to daddy:
Maddy: Daddy, Brownie is woofing!
She then turns to the door and screams:
Maddy: Brownie, hold on.. Daddy is coming
Daddy says he doesn’t need two people in the household to give him commands, and says that Brownie specially doesn’t want to hear things from Maddy, who took her queenship away.
===========================
The art of deniel:
In church, I talked to different aunties about Maddy being sick. The child turned around looking very displeased-
Maddy: Mommy, I’m not sick. I’m just fine
Mommy: You’re not? well, Mommy thinks you’re a little bit sick.
Maddy: No, I’m not a little bit sick
Maddy: Mommy, I’m not tired
Mommy: Ok, you’re not tired. You sit with mommy in the back today.
Five minutes later, she passed out… slept through loud singings, drums, and the dynamic speaker
