Beach Retreat

Posted in Life with my girls at 9:36 pm by tina

I was skeptical about having to spend with 6 other families (that is a grand total of 14 kids) under the same roof for a entire weekend, but it turned out lovely thanks to our beautiful beach house which boasts 10 bed rooms and 10 bathrooms with an ocean front view.
The kids were similar in age and most of them no longer require constant supervision. The worst battle we fought was that all the girls wanted to sleep in the bunk bed room and they (at least the younger ones) were pulled out one by one by their respective parents while they screamed and complained… It was 2:00am and they were not even close to be sleeping.
It’s off season and frankly a bit cold for a ‘beach retreat’, but we had the whole VA beach to ourselves:

The perfect punch line

Posted in Life with my girls at 10:50 pm by tina

I left the little girl with daddy in the playroom so that I can help Maddy practice her piano. Maddy didn’t even finish her first piece, and we heard this wailing coming from upstairs. A few minutes later I conceded and went upstairs to check on them after realizing that the screaming has become way too distractive for Maddy and I to continue.
I found the little girl laying on the floor, frailing her arms and legs, and in her tantrum ‘loop’ while her father is sitting right next to her.
me: What is wrong?
Livy: daddy.. wah wah wah
me: What did daddy do?
daddy: I didn’t do anything. She didn’t want my help with her puzzle. She didn’t want me to wipe her running nose. Her temp is heating up so quickly I had to cool her down and she didn’t like it.
me: Livy. Is it true?
Livy: no… wah wah wah
me: Did daddy try to help you?
Livy: no.
me: Did daddy take good care of you?
Livy: NO [shaking her head violently]
me: [fully knowing that the child is a queen of drama but her father is not much better but decided to play along anyway] Oh poor baby. Daddy, why didn’t you take good care of my baby?
Livy: [sniff sniff in my arms]
daddy: ok. Maybe she felt hot because she was so mad at me so she was sweating. Still, I was here with her the ENTIRE TIME.
me: yes, but you DIDN’T take good care of her. Livy told me.
daddy: That is so not true. She just wanted mommy to be here.

Maddy, who has come upstairs and witnessed the “He said, she said” episode on the sideline, turned to her father and exclaimed to him
“CHOP LIVER”!!

New Girl, New Obsession

Posted in Life with my girls at 10:23 pm by tina

Just when the big girl is slowly weaning off her “I need to wear a dress or my life is ruined” phase, the little girl started her own obsession: doing puzzles.
It is “Can I do puzzles?” first thing I hear when she wakes up; first thing she says to me when I drive her to school; first thing I hear when I pick her up in the afternoon, and the last thing I hear before I put her down in the crib.
It’s been “Can I do puzzles?” and follow by “Can you help me?” ALL DAY LONG!! And lazy mommy has been sending her greatest helper to Livy’s rescue:

Thank Goodness She Has Daddy’s Genes Too

Posted in Maddy at 10:06 pm by tina

The big girl is learning some pretty complicated music theories, well, for a 5 year old anyway. All that converting 8th notes to quarter notes to finish off the beats in the measure as well as the latest concept on transposition. I am so nervous for her since she is still slow on carry over additions. To my surprise, she is getting them. It takes her what seems like forever to think of the answers, but she gets them somehow, with that little five year old brain. I’m so proud of her, and would totally like to take full credit for passing on MY genes to her.

But then, I’m thankful that she has some of her daddy’s genes in her. Here is the picture of the pathetic me, sort of stuck in the middle of the climb and terrified about not being able to come down if I had actually gone all the way up:

Here is the girl, who decided that she can do it, happily enjoyed her high view with her father:

First one down this season

Maddy got sick. The girl had a Febrile Seizure last Thursday night, and has been off the on with her fever all the way until today.
It’s been two years since she last had a Febrile Seizure. She didn’t remember much of it, just mentioned that “mommy and daddy were bothering me when I was sleeping last night”. That would be an understatement of us trying frantically cooling her body down.
We stayed home most of Sat so she can get some much needed rest (and to contain her germs). We did a pinecone turkey craft because the little girl kept asking “I want a project”; made some homemade playdoh, which is so over-rated in my opinion (it’s sticky, messy, and not so impressive at all. Something is just better leaving to the mass production store bought play-doh, that is perfectly textured and colored with no mess); most of the time the two girls just ran around on their own.
The good thing is that she has recovered mostly except for her cough. The bad thing is that little girl is starting to have a cough. Let’s hope that the rest of us will hold up. It’s only beginning of October.
