Fruits are better

Posted in Life with my girls at 11:13 am by tina

During the Thanksgiving break, I decided to get into the holiday mode and bake some cookies for the girls to decorate. Besides, I wanted to try out the cookie cutters again. I’m not sure why, but the cookies did not bake according to the cutter shapes the first time we did it. They simply just melted into pretty much round cookies. I’m sure it’s obvious to most people who can bake/cook, but I was quite disappointed about the results.
Again, they just turned into blah round cookies, but the girls had a good time decorating them. My proudest moment as a mom came after they had a few bites of their first cookie: Both of the girls pushed away their cookie plates and asked “Can I have an orange now?”

Little brownnoser

We were sitting around the Thanksgiving dinner table, and I asked the girls what they are thankful for.
Maddy: I am thankful for Brownie.
Me: Thankful for Brownie? ok. I guess so.
Livy: [looking at ah-ma who was in her usual mode of trying to get all the food ready for everyone] I am thankful for AH-MA!!

Ah-ma was totally floored by the little girl. And the child had this biggest grin on her face, knowing that once again she had someone wrapped around her fingers.

Thanksgiving Rotation

Posted in Maddy at 11:14 pm by tina

The kindergarten classes had their special Thanksgiving Rotations on Monday and Tuesday. They got to go to 5 other kindergarten classes during the two days (there are 7 classes total but 1 is tracked out). In each room, they first listened to a 5 mins lesson by the teacher, then they got to do a craft the specific classroom is responsible for.
Herding 23 kids from room to room (and project to project) is not a easy task; however, it was obvious that these teachers have done it many times. On Monday, the kids learned about the very first Thanksgiving (how/why we celebrate), Native American symbols, and watched a introductory video on Thanksgiving. They made a pasta necklace (also learned pattern, and science experiment/lesson on how to dye pastas with berries) just because Mrs B can make any simple thing into amazing learning activities for the kids; a placemat (again had to create repetitive patterns and practice writing); and made a tambourine (decorated with the native american symbols). The whole morning flew by with a blink of an eye, and I was tickled to see how the kids were engaged and focused the whole time.
I wasn’t there on Tuesday. Maddy came home with the whole ensemble, singing and dancing the whole night. Life as a kindergartener is not shabby at all!

Safety Patrol Southern Style

Posted in Life with my girls at 10:43 pm by tina

Last Friday I had to drop by the grocery store to pick up some berries for Maddy’s kindergarten class project, and I ended up dropping the girl off at school as a car rider. It was my first time going through the drop-off circle, and quite honest a bit apprehensive. I pulled up to my spot:
Safety Patrol boy: [opened the door for Maddy] Good morning ma’am
me: How are you?
Safety Patrol boy; [help Maddy out] Have a great day ma’am [close the door for me]

He was super sweet, polite and professional (as professional as a safety patrol can be). I was quite impressed with how organized they are. Six cars park at the same time; they help the kids out; all the cars leave at the same time, and the cycle begins again. It put me in a good mood for the rest of the day. I guess a little bit of southern hospitality goes a long way!

All in one day’s work

Posted in Maddy at 11:40 pm by tina

School was out yesterday. Since I was still a bit under the weather, I decided to take the day off and just hang out with Maddy. We did have a very productive day though. I showed her how to make a to-do-list and we pretty much checked off everything.

She made the check box for ‘Relax’ much bigger and with multiple slots. After doing our first chore “clean up the playroom”, we both had realized that we would need many ‘relaxing’ moments. Here is the list of Maddy’s to-do-list

1. We can go to the library
2. Help mommy to find books
3. Practice piano
4. Do theory homework
5. Help mommy walk Brownie
6. Help mommy pick Livy (she meant pick Livy up from school)
7. relax
8. Go to Grand Asia (I needed to get sushi supplies for dinner)
9. Clean the playroom
10. play tic tac toe
11. Kidzui
12. Play in the backyard
13. cut the flower (I wanted to clean up the landscape a bit)
14. book (she meant read books)

Little angel

I was surprised to get a ‘Happy Gram!’ along with Livy’s daily report today. Usually, ‘nice’ would not be the objective I describe the little girl. She is fiesty, stubborn, sweet and lovely (when she wants to be), but ‘nice’, I’m not so sure.
But we made a big deal of it.. of how proud we are of her for being a big girl who uses her words. Daddy’s first reaction was “I guess she was upset today in school”. I was not the only person who was having a hard time comprehending that she was ‘nice’.
